Walter Lee Taylor, 73, lovingly known as, “Gunny”, “Walt”, “Top”, or “WL”, just to name a few, was born June 1, 1952, to Walter Lee and Maxine K. Taylor. Distinguished United States Marine Corps veteran, volunteer, loving father, fearless protector, great brother, and amazing friend, departed his earthly body on December 20, 2025.

Being the oldest of eight children, and the only boy, from an early age, Walter took his role as leader, big brother, and fearless protector with respect, pride and seriousness. His endearing and close bonds with his mother, children, sisters, nieces, and nephews were each uniquely different, yet all deeply special. His life was marked by service, dedication and commitment not only to his country, but to his family and those that had the pleasure of calling him friend.

Walter had many hobbies. At many family gatherings you could see or hear him “slapping” dominoes, talking and laughing loudly at a game of spades, or teaching a family member how to try a “winning” hand at poker, pool or chess. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, bicycling, fishing and hunting. These and many other countless moments that have now turned to memories will be forever cherished in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.

Through the loving guidance of his grandmother and mother, Walter was introduced and accepted Christ at an early age.

Walter received his early education in the Kansas City Public School System. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After enlisting in the Marine Corps, he continued his education and received his Associates of Arts from Palomar College, and his Bachelor of Arts with two majors: Public Administration and Public Management, both from Avila College.

Through perseverance, discipline, and exemplary leadership, Walter rose through the military ranks; and in 2004, after more than 30 years of service Walter honorably retired from the United States Marine Corps as Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Walter remained committed to public service working for FEMA for several years.

Walter was preceded in death by his father, Walter Lee Taylor Sr.; his mother, Maxine K. Taylor; two sisters: Lavon Taylor and Joyce Taylor; one nephew, Antoan Taylor; three uncles: Warren Williams, Slyvester Mack and Price Ellis; five aunts: Christine Woodson, Goldie Moore, Laverne Charles, Jan Mack and Stella Ellis; and, one paternal grandmother, Mary Taylor.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory: his daughter, Heidi Taylor (Anthony); his son: Spencer Taylor (Samantha); his sisters, Mary Wilson, Faye McBride, Elaine Dotson (Larry), Charlesetta Taylor and Angel Taylor-Crofton (Ronnie); two aunts: Mosie Lee Ashley and Shirley Williams; his loving and special companion, Adele Sandstede; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and loving friends.
