Listen to Obituary

Wanda J. Martin was born March 7, 1932, in Vinita, Oklahoma to the parents of Clint and Julia Allen who preceded her in death.  Wanda was raised in Vinita with her nine siblings, who also preceded her in death.  Losing her mother at a young age, Wanda was raised by her eldest sister, Annie, who she loved and respected dearly.

In 1949 she married Herbert Martin, who preceded her in death. The couple soon migrated to Kansas City, Missouri in 1949 where they raised their twelve children.  Wanda worked diligently as a domestic worker to support her children.  Her hard work was displayed in her ability to provide a stable home and where she resided for over 50 years and became a well-known pillar in her neighborhood. Wanda enjoyed sitting on her porch, drinking coffee while engaging in conversations with family, friends, and neighbors.

A faithful member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ. Wanda was active in the choir and a dedicated Sunday School Secretary.  Wanda consistently showed her love for the “Church on the hill” by supporting various activities from fundraisers for Pastor & Wife Anniversary, attending Bible Study, Vacation Bible School, and volunteering at UpLift Outreach Organization.

Wanda J. Martin departed her earthly life on Saturday, August 27, 2022, surrounded by family.

Three sons preceded her in death Herbert Martin, Lawrence Martin, and Michael Martin.

Wanda leaves to cherish her memory seven daughters, Elsie Merritt, Wanda Lunn, Patricia Milligan, Anita Martin, Dara Newsome, Lisa Martin, and Carolyn Williams; two sons, Keith Martin (Tia), and Wayne Martin, Sr. As she lived the true meaning of a matriarch, Wanda has 27 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, and 33 great-great grandchildren. Also, special friends Mary Russell, Alissa Glaser, and Bob Trapp.  Last but certainly not least, Wanda was well loved by a host of nieces and nephews who adored their “Aunt Wanda”.
