Listen to Obituary

Wanda Ann Stewart-Russell, 70 years of age, passed on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at St. Luke’s hospital. Wanda was born on July 8, 1950 in Kansas City, Kansas to Thickus and Ruby Mae (Stewart) Porter. She was the fourth oldest of 12 children; five of those siblings preceded her in death.  She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Alfonso Porter; brothers Leroy Harper, Terry Jones, Albert Porter, and Alfonso Porter, Jr.

Wanda attended Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri.  She professed her life to Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and attended Palestine Missionary Baptist Church.

Wanda married her crush, the late William Earl.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and so much more.  She was a true matriarch of the family and well known by the name of “Auntie Wanda.” Although she gave birth to one child, she was a mother to many.  Everyone who came in contact with her built a bond and walked away feeling an abundance of love.  She had a great sense of humor and always gave the best advice.

In her leisure, Wanda loved to play Pitty Pat, having deep rooted conversations, spending quality time with family and friends, laughing, and always wearing a smile on her face. To know her was to love her.

Wanda Ann leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter and son-in-law: DeAngela  and John T. Hightower Jr.; granddaughters: Aubrey, Johnaé, and Gabrielle; brothers: Monroe (Shirley) Harper, Leon Jones, Theodus (Cathy) Jones, Samuel (Gina) Porter; sisters:  Barbara (William) Warren, Sandra Kay (Frederick) Morgan, and Mary (Wayne) Whytus; sister-in-law’s; Beverly Harper and Debra Ann Porter; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Wanda left a legacy of love, light, happiness, and a generosity of spirit for all who knew her. Her life was well lived, and she will forever be remembered.
